This is the Drexel Engineering 103 blog for group 068-06. The goal of this lab is to create a LED fixture that can be implemented into a dementia ward at St. Francis Country House to help the health of the patients there. We are working with Group 068-05 to achieve this goal of creating a working prototype. Our group is primarily focusing on the manufacturing of the physical light fixture while the other group is working on programming the LEDs to simulate daylight.

Computer Components Corporation (CCC)

Computer Components Corporation (CCC) is a very high end machine shop located in Philadelphia.  They feature some of the most advanced tools in the industry for the cutting and machining of many different materials.  We had to take our two sheets of aluminum here to have them cut because unfortunately  Drexel's machine shop did not have the proper tools for the job.  For more information about CCC and all of their incredible services they have to offer visit their website here.

DIALux Software

DIALux is a very powerful piece of software that allows a user to be able to model a room and see how many and what types of lights need to be installed for greatest efficiency.  DIALux was used for this project to see if the light fixture we were designing would be bright enough for St. Francis Country House in the existing configuration.  For more information and to download DIALux visit their website here.

"In Eyes, a Clock Calibrated by Wavelengths of Light"

The article "In Eyes, a Clock Calibrated by Wavelengths of Light" by Lauren Beil talks about how the color of the light that we see can have an impact on a person's sleep patterns.  The research in this article showed how blue lights, like those of most LED and LCD screen, can have a harmful impact on a person's sleep patterns.  The article also talks about how red light causes the body to secrete certain chemicals that tend to put it to sleep.  The full article can be found here.
